“Occupational Therapy, turning can’t into I can, hopeless into hope and impossible into possible” ~ Valerie Pefia

One of the related services that a child with special needs might qualify for is occupational therapy (OT). OT is a type of treatment that concentrates on helping a student achieve independence in all areas of his life–cognitive, physical, and motor skills while building self-esteem.

AAMINAH ASVAT (BASSONIA BRANCH)

I grew up in a small town called Klerksdorp. Since my early teens, I have wanted to work with differently-abled children to help release their inner superheroes, kind of like a superhero coach. I may be just 25 years old now, but I am experienced with all sorts of superpowers. I can’t count how many times I have been painted on and sneezed on, but it is the little smiling faces that make it all worthwhile!

In 2013 I moved to Cape Town in order to complete my studies. While studying I was lucky enough to have most of my clinical blocks within a paediatric facility. This gave me a lot of exposure to a wide variety of kiddies and families. After completing my studies in 2018, I did my community service at Klerksdorp/Tshepong Hospital Complex. Here I was lucky enough to spend 6 months in the paediatric department. I’ve seen kiddies who were diagnosed with global developmental delay, autism, cerebral palsy, intellectual disability, ADHD and so much more. In 2019 I completed Tiny Hands Basic sign language course as well as the Building Brains course. In 2020 I completed the Autism Centred Education Course and module 1 and 2 Makaton training. In 2021 I am hoping to commence with my Sensory Integration course (SAISIC 1). I am lucky enough to be mentored by Jackie Selly Paterson since the beginning of 2020 and hope to continue this mentorship for the next few years.
